Former aircraft mechanic Abner Jenkins become frustrated with his state in life and, after creating an armored suit, turned to a life of crime. Beetle has clashed with the Thing, Human Torch, and Spider-Man at various points, having been repeatedly defeated and periodically imprisoned.
The Beetle fell under the control of the Collector when he was given an obedience potion which forced him to obey the Collector against his will. In this condition Beetle attacked Hawkeye in Avengers Mansion, losing and being left tied up. (Avengers #27) When he managed to free himself, Beetle was able to kidnap Wasp and returned her to the Collector. (Avengers #28)
