The warrior king of the African nation of Wakanda, T’Challa bears the mantle of Black Panther. His first encounter with superheroes took place when he invited the Fantastic Four to Wakanda in order to test the heroes. Upon completing his tests, Black Panther invited the Fantastic Four to help him drive off Klaw. Soon thereafter, Black Panther teamed up with Captain America, after which Cap recommended Black Panther to take his recently vacated place on the Avengers (Avengers #51). When he arrives in New York, he is horrified to find the Avengers dead and Black Panther is quickly accused of their murders, though the charges are later dropped when Black Panther proves the Avengers were not dead, but under the influence of Grim Reaper’s technology (Avengers #52). Black Panther has proven a consistently powerful member of the Avengers and a worthy replacement for Captain America. Frequently through out his tenure though, T’Challa wonders if he is better serving his country as their king or as the Black Panther. Either way, T’Challa is a constant advocate for his people in the world at large.
